There is a pasuk in Parshas Ki Sisa: ‫כי תשא את ראש בני ישראל לפקדיהם ונתנו איש כפר נפשו לה׳ בפקד אתם ולא יהיה בהם נגף בפקד אתם זה יתנו כל העבר על הפקדים מחצית‬ ‫“ – השקל בשקל הקדש עשרים גרה השקל מחצית השקל תרומה לה׳‬When you will take the headcount of Bnei Yisroel according to their numbers, each man should give atonement for his life to Hashem when counting them so that there is no plague as a result of the counting. The mitzvah to count the people is formulated as follows: ‫שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל למשפחתם‬ ‫ לבית אבתם במספר שמות כל זכר לגלגתם‬- “Take a census of the entire assembly of Bnei Yisroel according to their families, according to their fathers’ house, by number of names, every male according to their head count.” (Bamidbar 1:2). What Makes a Teacher Into a Parent is Not What He Does From 9 Till 5 In this week’s sedra the pasuk says: ‫ ואלה תולדות אהרן ומשה ביום דבר ה׳ את משה בהר סיני ואלה שמות בני אהרן הבכר נדב ואביהו אלעזר ואיתמר‬- “These are the offspring of Aharon and Moshe on the day Hashem spoke with Moshe at Har Sinai: These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the firstborn was Nodav, and Avihu, Elozar, and Isomar” (Bamidbar 3:1-2).
