However, the truth is that each mitzvah we do, wheth- er it is putting on Teffillin, lighting Shabbos candles, or helping an old lady cross the street, has the potential to tip the Heavenly scales in our favor. Campaigns begin months in advance, with billboards, lawn signs and public transit plastered with advertise- ments, proclaiming each candidate’s promises of honest governance and only the best for the people. In a country of over three-hundred million, my vote cannot possibly make a difference!” Yet, we are told, that we do have an impact; we can make a difference. Imagine, for a moment, how disap- pointed you would be, if you didn’t vote and after all the ballots were counted, your candidate lost by one vote. What are the chances that, after many hundreds of years in Exile, my one mitzvah will change the whole world? And it is this possi- bility that drives us, every other year, without fail, to the voting-booth. From a young age, we are bombarded with the slogan, repeated over and over: “Every vote counts”. Each party collects millions of dollars to finance all of its attempts to promote its ideals. Debates and speeches are aired, live, on TV and radio as citizens take sides in the race. However, we take a step back and think “what dif- ference does my one, measly vote make?
