After that private audience the Alter Rebbe went into shul, ascended the bima, and announced in his powerful sweet voice “He gives abundant life in his great kindness but not in the factories where strong drink is made.1 Hashem’s kindness is not like earthly kindness which requires a reason for doing the kindness. 1 Page 1 the government had taken over manufacturing strong drink from which business the Jews had made ample parnosa up until then CR MDS Free Translation Leibel Estrin Bitzalel Malamud Bitzalel says “Hashem gave me the Rebbe and the Rebbe gave me Hashem” “Our Rebbe says that we should tell the nations that the land of Israel is ours as a gift and an inheritance from our Father the King and Creator of the universe” B”H Shabbos Chol Hamoad Succos 5786 And, our Rebbe concluded, since words of tzadikim exist forever, the events in this story exist now. [Purim 5718] 2 Page CR MDS Free Translation Leibel Estrin Bitzalel Malamud Bitzalel says “Hashem gave me the Rebbe and the Rebbe gave me Hashem” “Our Rebbe says that we should tell the nations that the land of Israel is ours as a gift and an inheritance from our Father the King and Creator of the universe” B”H Shabbos Chol Hamoad Succos 5786 Livelihood with no Worries The Previous Rebbe related that at one point in the days of the Alter Rebbe, the economic situation was so difficult that livelihood was very hard to obtain. He stood at the bima in in that hostile environment and announced in his signature chant, “Taste and see, Hashem is good!” The result was that tens of young Torah scholars became his disciples. And even though worrying cannot contribute to the loss of one’s livelihood, worries do bring confusion, as is said regarding a healthy person who is depressed-- that too is a sickness. “When blessings flow from above, it is necessary to make vessels below to receive them.” Those vessels, he continued, are love and harmony not jealousy and gossip. When the Kohanim bless the people, they make a bracha that Hashem “commands us to bless his people with love.” There is a dual intention in that blessing. Special, prominent Chassidim including the Mittler Rebbe, Aron Strellesher
