The Prohibition Against Asking for Personal Needs on Shabbos The Yerushalmi (Shabbos 15:3) rules: ‫“ — אסור לאדם לתבוע צרכיו בשבת‬It is forbidden for a person to demand his personal needs on Shabbos.” The Yerushalmi asks: If so, how come one is allowed to say: — “Our Father – tend us, nourish us, sustain us? And the Yerushalmi answers: ‫“ – טופס ברכות כך הן‬It is part of the standard text of the berachah.” The Korban HaEidah explains: Part of the oneg of Shabbos is that a person feels as if all his work is done — one who requests his needs signals the opposite, additionally it brings anxiety into one’s heart. The Medrash Tanchuma (Parshas Vayera, siman 1) explains why we don’t recite eighteen berachos in Shemonah Esrei on Shabbos: Since the middle twelve ‫ ואגב כל צרכיהם‬,‫ וביותר צריך זירוז להתפלל שיהיה לו זרע כשר עד עולם‬:‫ הלשון של השל''ה הקדוש‬1 ‫ שעת רצון לתפלה זו בערב ר"ח סיון הוא חודש שבו ניתנה התורה‬,‫ ולבי אומר‬.‫וזיווגם מה' יצא הדבר‬ .‫ואז נקראים בנים לה' אלוקינו‬ ~1~ berachos all address personal needs, reciting them would cause distress — a person with a sick relative, for example, would be pained when reciting Rofei Cholei Amoi Yisrael. The above Medrash seems to contradict the Gemara in Berachos (21a) which says that the reason Chazal never obligated us to daven eighteen berachos in Shemonah Esrei on Shabbos, is because they didn’t want to burden us to much as
