Seder night is known as Leil Shimurim, which literally means a night of guarding and protection, however, what exactly does this mean, who are we guarded from? 123) that on the night of Pesach before going to sleep, one should recite hamapil and krias shema, however, the other pasukim that one normally recites to protect against mazikim may be omitted, as it is a ‫“ – ליל המשומר ובא מן המזיקים‬a night of protection against mazikim.” The Rema (481:2) brings this l’halachah and says: “The minhag is to recite just the parsha of shema, and to omit the other things that one normally recites for protection as it is a night of guarding against mazikim.” The Magen Avraham (481, s.k. ~2~ Why Do We Recite the First Parsha of Shema We saw from the Rema that the minhag is that on Seder night we recite just shema and there is no need to add on the various other pasukim that we normally add for shemirah [protection], as it is Leil Shimurim from mazikim. The Rema himself (Orach Chaim 239:1) rules: “If one recited shema and he is unable to fall asleep, he may repeat the first parsha of shema many times, until he falls asleep.” The Magen Avraham explains that it’s not an interruption between hamapil and falling asleep, as the Rema holds like the Rambam, that the idea of krias shema al hamittah is for shemirah, therefore, it is considered part of what one needs to recite before going to sleep. Therefore, before going to bed on Seder night it would be a shame to miss out on something else which serves to strengthen our emunah, therefore, although we may be protected from mazikim, we recite the first parsha of shema as it helps to strengthen our emunah even more. ‫“ – ליל המשומר ובא מן המזיקים‬A Night of Guarding and Protection from Demons” The pasuk in Shemos (12:42) tells us that the night of Pesach is: '‫ליל שמרים הוא לה‬ ‫“ – להוציאם מארץ מצרים הוא הלילה הזה לה' שמרים לכל בני יש
