A poor man was on his way home with a basket of produce and after appraising the situation he fed the animal his produce which caused the animal to sneeze out a needle that had been stuck in his throat and then continued on his way. 2 But a rich man who brings a poor man’s korbon does not fulfill his obligation, Whether it’s regarding our children, our spouses, our employees, or ourselves, properly assessing one’s capabilities is a constant challenge. In response, 1 the Rebbe noted that he was surprised that Rabbi Friedman didn’t include the name of this G-d- fearing donor, although his intention to protect the donor’s dignity was certainly noble. They sent a letter to the Rebbe informing him of their resolution, to which the Rebbe replied: ‫הרי זה בחינת עשיר שהביא מנחת עני‬, this is like a rich man bringing a poor man’s korbon. In Klalei Hachinuch V’hadrachah, the Frierdiker Rebbe explains at great length that in the education of both children and adults, it is imperative that we properly assess a person’s abilities. Then the Rebbe added that he should find “illuminating words” to explain to the donor what Chazal say about the significance of the poor man’s korbon, including the following story. When my father-in-law was a bochur in his early twenties he spent several years as a shliach to the Chabad Yeshiva in Miami, Florida. There was a rich man who was leading a fattened ox to the Beis Hamikdash as a korbon when, suddenly, the animal refused to walk. A poor man who pushes himself to bring a rich man’s korbon actually does fulfill his obligation and is praised for doing so.
