E-mail DoItForDovid@gmail.com “And [Moshe] said to them, “I am 120 years old today…” (Devarim 31:2) On the last day of his life, Moshe spoke to the Jews, telling them that he was 120 years old, and he would not be leading them further, but Yehoshua would. (No word on how they kept them quiet.) Since it happens at the end of Sukkos, though, we may ask why the Torah inserts it in the Parsha that is nearly always Shabbos Shuva, the week between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. The next posuk says, “My anger will flare against him on that day and I will abandon him.” The trop marks on these words are, “munach, munach, munach, t’lisha gedola, gershayim.” Munach means to place down, or leave something at rest. You don’t need me anymore.” Further, “Hashem told me that I can’t cross the Jordan, but He will bring you across into Eretz Yisrael.” It was not due to weakness that Moshe could go no further, but due to Hashem’s command. Perhaps this is one reason why there must be a minimum of four days of selichos, supplications of asking forgiveness, prior to Rosh HaShana, so his connection to G-d is once again permanent. The unity exhibited, as well as the recognition of how important every individual is to the entire nation, is something we must contemplate as we go to the day of Judgment and Atonement. Perhaps the message for us is that Hakhel, which translates as “gather,” is an integral part not only of the once- in-seven-years mitzvah, but of our continued existence. It became clear to the man that the strange conversation he had with the Tzaddik a few hours earlier was meant to dispel the fears that might engulf him later that day. Once every seven years, just after the Shemita year (like this year) a special platform is erected in the Bais HaMikdash and the Jewish King reads from the Torah. If, however, one has not done so, he can regret the time lost, thereby utilizing it as a catalyst for growth now, and turn it around so his days are complete.
