B"H ‫ספורי‬ R' ASHER IN CLEVELAND ‫חסידים‬ As told by R’ Yoske Sossonko A”H: The first time R’ Asher Sossonko A”H came to the Rebbe, in Elul 5724/1963, it was customary for guests to go into Yechidus with the Rebbe twice, once at the beginning of Tishrei and once at the end. When all the Bochurim had finally admitted defeat, R’ Yehuda had said, “I did not expect you to answer this question, I merely wanted to see how you attempt to answer it, so that I can see where you are holding.” ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ B"H ‫ספורי‬ R' ASHER IN CLEVELAND ‫חסידים‬ With that in mind, R’ Asher turned to the Telzer Bochurim and said, “Let’s discuss Kiddushin.” The Bochurim agreed and R’ Asher asked them the question R’ Yehuda had asked, and as expected, they were dumbfounded. There is no question AT ALL in my mind that this was an open miracle from the Rebbe, that all of a sudden I should remember Reb Yehuda Eber’s question and answer, so that there should be a Kiddush Sheim Lubavitch!” ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ While at the Yeshiva, R’ Asher was suddenly surrounded by six tall Bochurim who said to him, “Let’s discuss learning!” R’ Asher thought this “surprise attack” might have been orchestrated by R’ Chaim Shtein, the Rosh Yeshiva, who had met Chabad Chassidim in Samarkand during World War II. So R’ Asher gently asked them, “You don’t know the Gemara Kiddushin?” The Bochurim looked at each other in surprise and quickly explained that it was only because they were currently learning a different Gemara; so R’ Asher asked if there was anyone in the Yeshiva who knew Kiddushin. He also saw them whispering to each other about “the great genius who had arrived from Russia.” By Mincha, R’ Asher went to another Cleveland Shul, to continue his Shlichus from the Rebbe, and when the Rov, who was a Chassid from Poland, saw him, he came running, saying, “I heard that a great genius arrived from Russia!” It turns out that the Bochur who knew the entire Shas was the Rov’s son, and the whole city was reluctantly impressed with this Chabad Chassid. R’ Shtein was known not to be a big fan of Lubavitch, and R’ Asher was worried, because Russian Jews ALWAYS thought that those who lived in the “free world” must be genius Torah scholars, since they were not persec
