In our Tefilos and Kiddush, we say, “‫ זְמַן חֵרוּתֵ ֽנוּ‬- the time of our freedom.” In the Haggada, we say, “‫ הוֹצִיאָ ֽנוּ מֵ עַ בְדוּת לְ חֵרוּת‬- He (Hashem) took us out from slavery to freedom.”[1] However, the Hebrew word ‫חֵרוּת‬, as a term for freedom, does not appear, even once, throughout all of TaNaKh. The biblical word for freedom is actually ‫ חֹפֶשׁ‬as it says: ‫ כִּי תִ קְ נֶה עֶ בֶד עִ בְרִ י‬Should you buy a Hebrew slave, ‫ שֵׁשׁ שָׁ נִים יַעֲב ֹד‬he shall work (for) six years, ‫ וּבַ שְּׁ בִ עִת‬and in the seventh, ‫ יֵצֵא לַ חָ פְ שִׁי חִ נָּם‬he shall go out free without charge.[2] Alternatively, another word that conveys the idea of freedom is ‫דְּ רוֹר‬. This word also means “flowing, liberty, and can refer to a sparrow or swallow bird.[3] The Ramban explains that the word ‫ דְּ רוֹר‬is an abbreviation for “‫ דֹּור הֹלְֵך וְדֹור בָּא‬- One generation goes, another comes.”[4] Question: If the biblical words for freedom are ‫ חֹפֶשׁ‬or ‫דְּ רוֹר‬, why did our Sages designate the word ‫ חֵרוּת‬for freedom? In Pirkei Avot, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi encourages us to occupy ourselves with learning Torah, as he says: ‫ וְ הַ לֻּח ֹת מַ עֲ שֵׂה אֱֹלקִים הֵ מָּה‬And the Luchos (tablets) were the work of G-d, ‫ וְ הַ מִּ כְתָּ ב מִ כְתַּ ב אֱֹלקִים הוּא‬and the writing was the writing of G-d ‫ חָרוּת עַל הַ לֻּח ֹת‬engraved upon the Luchos.[5] ‫ ַאל תִּ קְרָ א חָרוּת‬Don’t read "engraved" (‫)חָרוּת‬ ‫ אֶ לָּא חֵרוּת‬but rather read it as "freedom." (‫)חֵרוּת‬ ‫ שֶׁ אֵין לְָך בֶּן חוֹרִ ין‬For there is no free individual, ‫ אֶ לָּא מִי שֶׁעוֹסֵק בְּתַ לְמוּד תּוֹרָ ה‬Except for one who works towards the study of Torah.[6] Three Levels of Freedom In his expansive 3 volume set on the Haggadah, entitled “Pathways to Pesach and the Haggadah,” R. Aquila answered: “A man can never fully understand the Torah if he remains uncircumcised, as it is said: ‫ מַ גִּיד דְּ בָרָ יו לְ יַעֲק ֹב חֻ קָּיו וּמִ שְׁ פָּ טָיו לְ יִשְׂרָ אֵל‬- He tells His words to Jacob, His statutes, and His judgments to Israel.[10] That is, HaShem gives his words of Torah to one who is like Yaakov (the Jews) and is circumcised, but not to people who are uncircumcised.”[11] From this clever e
