They turned their staffs into snakes (which were gobbled up).1 They turned water into blood,2 and they produced frogs.3 But when it came to the plague of lice, the verse says,4 “The sorcerers with their spells tried to produce lice, but they could not.” As such they were forced to admit to Pharaoh that this plague was “the finger of G-d.”5 No Power Over Small Objects Rashi explains6 that the reason they could not produce lice is because lice are smaller than a barleycorn and that demons don’t have power on objects smaller than a barleycorn. But see Targum Yonatan and others who interpret this to mean that the sorcerers were saying to Pharaoh that the plague must have been a natural occurrence and couldn’t have been wrought by Moshe and Ahron since even they, the mighty sorcerers,h were unable to replicate it, The Ibn Ezra says that this is why they said the finger of “Elokim” (the G-d of nature) instead of the finger of “Havayah” (the G-d who transcends nature) as they believed in Elokim but not in Havayah. The Shtark Kasha / Strong Question Here is the question: According to Rashi, we understand why the sorcerers admitted to Pharaoh that this plague was the “finger of G-d” since Moshe accomplished what they could not – creating an object smaller than a barley corn.
