The Pasuk records Moshe's reaction to this display of physical abuse (Shemos 2:12): "He turned this way and that way, and he saw that there was no man; so, he struck the Egyptian and hid him in the sand." Rav Yosef Veiner posits that (at first glance) this course of action didn't seem like the best play. The Mishna (ibid, 2:5) says: "do not say when | have free time | will learn, lest you not have free time.» Moshe Rabbeinu's mindset wasn't, "| need to do Hashem's job and figure out the last detail - how the Egyptian exile will end.” His modus operandi was to focus on the mission in front of him, which was the plight of the suffering Jew before his eyes. The possibility that Moshe would lose his standing in the Egyptian palace and not be able to help others wasn't a consideration at all, and neither was it his place to decide if this Jew was “collateral damage." Moshe knew - and we would be wise to remember - that the outcome of all events comes from Hashem, and that Hashem has many messengers to carry out His goals (Gemara, Taanis 18b). Moshe just did his part and indeed, it later became apparent how right this decision was, as Hashem didn't want Moshe in the country so that the Jews would feel hopeless and turn only to their Creator (and not to the palace's "inside man.") We can also appreciate that Moshe Rabbeinu made all these "calculations" under tremendous pressure. The Rebbe read the note carefully and asked: "How is your wife's leg?"
