R’ Eli Chaim said that now that R’ Michoel had given him this answer, he will tell R’ Yosef Bentzion a story in support of the decision: There was once a wealthy Chassid of the Rebbe Maharash who lived in a town with two melamdim, one who was a Chassid and one who was a Misnaged. B"H ‫ספורי‬ THE CHASSIDISHE ‫חסידים‬ TEACHER As told by R’ Mendel Raices: During World War II, hunger and illness spread in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, greatly affecting all who lived there, especially the Jewish community. Keen not to waste any more time not learning, but unsure what to do because this melamid was not a Chassid and might teach in a way that wasn’t in keeping with Chassidus, R’ Yosef Bentzion went to R’ Eli Chaim for advice. Resolved to do as his teacher instructed, R’ Yosef Bentzion went outside and almost immediately bumped into R’ Michoel Teitelbaum A"H, the well-known Chassid who was always very busy with communal affairs. A few months later, one of the other Chassidim living in the town overheard this young boy make a disrespectful joke about the Rebbe Maharash to his friends one Shabbos afternoon! The Rebbe asked who the boy’s teacher was, and the wealthy Chassid explained that he had transferred the boy into the Misnagdishe teacher’s class since he was a better melamid. The Rebbe Maharash told the Chassid that he should immediately put his son back in the Chassidishe melamid’s class and then gave the child a brocha for a long and healthy life. The melamid noticed that R’ Yosef Bentzion was out of class and offered to teach him Gemara, hoping that R’ Yosef Bentzion’s father would pay him for his services. The Rebbe asked the man why he would say such a thing, and so the wealthy Chassid shamefully explained how his son had made a disrespectful joke about the Rebbe.
