On the previous three occasions, Moshe was able to defend them, but now “nitrashelu yadav” — “his hands sank down” — since he feared that Hashem would no longer accept his advocacy. Upon hearing these words, Moshe became very frightened, because this undermined the defense he presented in the case of the golden calf on behalf of the Jewish people. He posited that all the Jews were holy and by gaining power at their expense, Moshe was acting improperly, almost a form of me’ila, misappropriation of holy items. He stated that Moshe and Aharon were literally lifting themselves up “on the congregation of Hashem.” That’s because Korach misunderstood what a Jewish leader is. Why isn’t it sufficient to just have a blue garment to remind us of the sea, and the sea of the sky, and the sky of Hashem’s throne as we are taught? He believed it was because Moshe wanted the power for himself and therefore put his brother in the number two spot in the hierarchy of the Jews.
