Once again, let’s examine the very first2 appearance of the term ‫( אחד‬Echad) in Torah, in the story of creation in this week’s Parsha: ‫ַו ִּי ְק ָר א ֱא ֹלקים ָל אֹו ר יֹו ם ְו ַל חֶׁש ְך ָק ָר א ָל ְי ָל ה ַו ְי ִה י ֶע ֶר ב ַו ְי ִה י ֹבֶק ר יֹו ם ֶא ָח ד‬ And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night, and it was evening and it was morning, one day. The second mention of Echad, in our Parsha, is also a phenomenon of two elements which become one: ‫ַעל ֵּכן ַיֲעָזב ִאיׁש ֶאת ָאִביו‬ ‫ ְוֶאת ִאּמֹו ְוָד ַבק ְּבִאְׁשּתֹו ְוָהיּו ְלָבָׂשר ֶאָחד‬-Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. In the words of the Rebbe Rashab: The Midrash (Bereishis Rabba), commenting on why the ‫ּו ְב ִמ ְד ָר ׁש ַר ָּב ה ְּב ֵר אִׁש ית סֹו ף ָּפ ָר ָׁש ה ג' ִא יָת א‬ term “‫ יום אחד‬Day One” is used (not “the first day”) ‫ְּב ֵפ ר ּו ׁש יֹו ם ֶא ָח ד "ָא ַמ ר ַר ִּב י י ּו ָד ן ֶׁש ּב ֹו ָה ָי ה‬ states: “Rabbi Yudan said “For on that day G-d’s oneness ‫ַה ָּק דֹו ׁש ָּב ר ּו ְך ה ּו א ְי ִח י ִד י ְּב עֹו ָל מֹו ֶׁש ֹּלא ָה ָי ה‬ was manifest in the universe, there was nothing but He.” ‫ ְו ִא ם ֵּכ ן‬, ‫ ַע ד ַּכ אן ְל ׁש ֹו נֹו‬,"‫ְּב עֹו ָל מֹו ֶא ָּל א ה ּו א‬ Thus, “day one” indicates a revelation of “You are ‫ֵּפ ר ּו ׁש יֹו ם ֶא ָח ד ֶׁש ְּב יֹו ם ֶז ה ֵה ִא יר ְּב ִח יַנ ת ַא ָּת ה‬ one”... … ‫ֶא ָח ד‬ On “day one” of creation there was a revelation of ‫ְו ֵכ ן ָה ָי ה ַה ִּג ּל ּו י ַּב ּי ֹו ם ָה ִר אׁש ֹו ן ְּד ַמ ֲע ֵׂש ה ְב ֵר אִׁש ית‬ G-dliness to the point that nothing else existed ‫ֶׁש ָה ָי ה ַה ָּק דֹו ׁש ָּב ר ּו ְך ה ּו א ְי ִח י ִד י ְּב עֹו ָל מֹו ֶׁש ָה ָי ה‬ independently, only the oneness of Hashem... to perceive that even presently, ‫ְו ֶז ה ּו ִע ְנ ַי ן ה' ֶא ָח ד ֵל י ַד ע ּו ְל ַה ֲא ִמ ין ֶׁש ַּג ם ַע ְכ ָׁש ו‬ when the world’s existence appears to be an entity of its ‫ֶׁש ָה עֹו ָל ם ִנ ְר ֶא ה ִּב ְמ ִצ יא ּו ת ה ּו א ֶּב ֱא ֶמ ת ה' ֶא ָח ד‬ own, we arrive at the consciousness of oneness, as it was ‫ְּכ מֹו ְּב יֹו ם ֶא ָח ד ְּד יֹו ם ָה ִר אׁש ֹו ן ְּד ַמ ֲע ֵׂש ה ְב ֵר אִׁש ית‬ on Day One, that truly there exists only Hashem ...' ‫כ ּו‬ Echad... day one” indicates that ‘one’ can only be achieved when there is ‫יֹו ם ֶ
