If this was so, why did the Rebbe need to continue with the second half of the Maamar?” R’ Zalman Dovid answered the Frierdiker Rebbe (the answer is unknown), but the Frierdiker Rebbe showed no expression and did not acknowledge the answer. (This was during the years that the Rebbe Rashab said the Maamarim of ‫תרע”ב‬, a collection of Chassidic discourses.) The Frierdiker Rebbe continued and asked R’ Zalman Dovid why he spent so long thinking about the Maamer. R’ Zalman Dovid jokingly replied that when he finishes davening, he does go to Seder… but at that point of the day the other Bochurim had already moved on to learning Chassidus, so how could he open a Yoreh Deiah and study Nigleh? At this point, R’ Yankel Boruch stopped admonoshing R’ Zalman Dovid for missing so much Seder because R’ Yankel Boruch saw that he was late because he spent the entire time Davening B’Avodah instead. Originally a Baal Nigleh, one who excels in the study of the revealed parts of Torah, it was only once he “tasted” some Chassidus that R’ Zalman Dovid began to Daven in the ways of Chassidim. B"H ‫ספורי‬ R’ ZALMAN DOVID ‫חסידים‬ HAMLINER This story was told by R’ Mendel Futerfas A”H: R’ Zalman Dovid Hamliner A”H was a bochur in Tomchei Tmimim, known to have a good head. The Frierdiker Rebbe asked R’ Zalman Dovid why it took him so long to Daven and he explained that first he meditates on the Maamar the Rebbe Rashab gave over the previous Friday night. In fact, when R’ Yankel Boruch met him in the street, he asked R’ Zalman Dovid if he was still learning in Tomchei Tmimim; and if yes, why hadn’t he come to Seder Nigleh in a while?!
