This {process} is called Hechsher {making it susceptible}, as the verse states,2 ‘If water is placed upon a seed {and a carcass falls upon it, it becomes impure}.’”1 Later, in the second chapter,3 the Rambam introduces a third condition specifically regarding foods that grow from the ground.4 He states that “they do not contract impurity until they are uprooted. This is why the Jewish people are calledAdam, “You are called Adam,”12 because a Jew isAdameh l’Elyon, similar, as it were, to the Supernal Man on the Throne.13 This gives new meaning to the phrase “food designated for human consumption.” 14 In a broader sense, eating refers to drawing down all human necessities. But “whatever is not designated for human consumption is pure and cannot contract impurity.” Since it is not connected to the Supernal Human on the Throne, to holiness,17 the opposing forces expend no effort there, and therefore no impurity can take hold,18 as explained above. b) Regarding food itself, the function of water (through drinking) is to distribute the food throughout the entire body.21 This is why the Sages say,22 “He who eats but does not drink, his eating becomes blood” {i.e., it causes physical harm rather than providing nourishment}. Because of this, the forces ofkelipah make a concerted effort to introduce impurity specifically when the “human food” has been made susceptible through being “wetted first by one of the seven liquids.” It is exactly here that there is an abundance of holy life - force, from which the kelipah desperately wants to extract additional sustenance. This outward flow of giving is a primary hallmark of holiness, 25 the exact opposite of the impure force which “gathers but does not give out.”25] However, when the “human food” has not been made susceptible by water, it lacks this immense surge of holy life-force.
