REBBE RESPONSA The Rebbe's English Letters Toppling Modern-Day Hamans Issue 146 Purim, 5786 Rebbe Responsa | 2 ‫ב”ה‬ A Word from the Publishers We are pleased to present Issue 146 of Rebbe Responsa, a compilation of letters originally authored by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in English, culled from the Rebbe Responsa app. 16 Haman targeted Jewish distinctiveness; what he didn’t understand: maintaining unique identity and values strengthens, not threatens, the nation Rebbe Responsa | 4 1 An Urgent Mobilization Call To defeat Haman of today, we must urgently gather children and teach them Torah; redemption is in our hands [Circa Adar 5703]* A PURIM MESSAGE On the festival of Purim, when we all listen carefully to the reading of the Megilah and ponder upon the story it tells us, let us all remember a few important details and facts that took place in those days at this time: There arose then a Haman, who issued a decree to murder and destroy all Jews at a fixed date. All the children are so enchanted by the new spirit that Mordecai had inculcated into them, that even facing the danger of death, they exclaim: We stick with Mordecai and the Torah — for life or death!2 Source: This message for children, written on the letterhead of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, was composed during the Holocaust. To tell them that the complete redemption really lies in our own hands, and there is no place for despair, for as soon as we Jews return to G-d in complete repentance—we are redeemed immediately.3 To tell them, further, that our Holy Temple will be rebuilt soon, and we must all be worthy and prepared to serve our G-d in our Holy Temple. On the day when the Jewish children are imbued with this spirit, and are ready to exclaim — “We remain with thee, our Torah, for life or death” — on that very day, our Torah assures us, the decree will be rescinded, Haman will be defeated,4 and all Jews will have ’light, gladness, joy and respect’,5 speedily in our time. Purim, commemorating the triumph of our people over Haman, was achieved by the fact that notwithstanding the persecutions perpetrated against them by Haman for no other reason than that of being Jews, the Jews continued to cling to their faith and traditions with even great
