Now, in truth, this is a very familiar parsha to us, not necessarily because of Parshas Ki Savo and not par琀椀cularly because it was read annually by every Jew bringing their 昀椀rst fruits to Yerushalayim, but primarily because it occupies a very large part of the Pesach Haggadah. Therefore, when talking about selichos before Rosh Hashanah the Shulchan Aruch writes áÝÖØÕà – <there is a custom=, since it is merely a custom, however, when talking about selichos during Aseres Yemei Teshuvah the Shulchan Aruch (602:1) writes it in a more obligatory manner and says: áÝÕí‫ מ‬áÝíÕ‫פ‬ßØ áÕÝà ØàîØ î‫א‬í ßÝÕî áÝ‫מ‬ÝØ àßÕ áÝàÕà×‫ת‬ÕÕ ‫ת‬Õà‫תפ‬Õ – <In all the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur one should increase in te昀椀llah and in supplica琀椀ons=.1 Reasons for The Minhag The Ran (Rosh Hashanah 27) writes that according to Rebbi Eliezer the world was created on the 25th of Elul, therefore, we wake up early to say selichos star琀椀ng from the 25th of Elul, which is four days before Rosh Hashanah.
