To resolve this, Rashi brings the parable: “{It can be compared} to a king who grew angry with his beloved friend {for his misdeeds}, but minimized the friend’s sirchon ( ‫ )סִ רְחֹונֹו‬due to his {great} affection for him.” Rashi’s intent here follows the literal meaning of his words. He generally does not “state a teaching in the name of its author.” From this rule itself, we can conclude that in the rare instances where Rashi departs from his usual practice and does mention the author by name, it constitutes an integral part of the explanation. The Gemara2 cites two statements fromTanna d’vei Rabbi Yishmael (the school of Rabbi Yishmael), one following the other, concerning the differences in wording between the verses describing the par he’elam davar brought by the anointed priest ( kohen hamashiach) 3 {for his unwitting sin} and the one brought on behalf of the community: a) “For what reason are the diaphragm and the two kidneys stated with regard to the bull {for an unwitting sin} of the anointed priest,4 and they are not {explicitly} stated with regard to the bull for an unwitting communal sin?5 {This can be explained by} a parable: {It can be compared} to a king of flesh -and-blood who grew angry with his beloved friend {for his misdeeds}, but minimized the friend’s offense due to his {great} affection for him.” b) “For what reason is it stated: ‘{In front of} theholy Curtain,’ with regard to the bull {for an unwitting sin} of the anointed priest, 6 and this is not stated with regard to the bull for an unwitting communal sin, {where it merely states: 7 ‘In front of the Curtain’? But if the majority {of the province} sinned, {his relationship with} his entourage does not remain, {and he 8 no longer meets even those who remained devoted to him.}” Rashi, in his commentary on the Torah, addresses both of these textual changes and cites both parables.
