B"H ‫ספורי‬ THE ISSUE WITH THE ‫חסידים‬ CHABAD SCHOCHET As told in the sefer Reshimos Dvarim: The Tzaddik R’ Hillel Paritcher was famous for having a Melava Malka every Motzei Shabbos, where he would serve chicken that had been freshly schechted (after Shabbos). Worried, R’ Yosef turned to R’ Hillel and said, “If there truly is an issue with the meat, tell us so that we don’t eat from it either, and if there is no Halachic issue, why won’t you eat from the Chabad Schochet?” R’ Hillel quietly replied that the Chabad Schochet indeed schechts meat properly, however, R’ Hillel had once heard that he had embarrassed and degraded a Talmid Chacham (who had already passed away). ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ B"H ‫ספורי‬ THE ISSUE WITH THE ‫חסידים‬ CHABAD SCHOCHET A bit surprised, his wife rushed to assure R’ Yosef that everything was fully kosher, and there were no questions on the meat. Concerned, R’ Yosef asked, “Since the Talmid Chacham already passed away, how can this Schochet fix this problem?” R’ Hillel said that the shochet should gather ten men and go to the Talmid Chocham’s grave and ask for forgiveness. There were two shochtim in Kremenchug, one a Poilisher Chassid and the other a Chabad Chassid; and for his Melave Malka, R’ Hillel specifically requested the chicken be schechted by the Poilisher Chassid. Being that her husband, who was the Rov of Kremenchug, did indeed eat from the Chabad Schochet’s meat, the woman decided to have him schecht the chicken instead, because there was no other option. Immediately, R’ Yosef understood that something was wrong with the chicken and asked his wife what had happened, and why hadn’t she told him of the problem beforehand?! So, that Motsei Shabbos, R’ Yosef’s wife took a chicken and went to the Poilisher schochet’s house as the Tzaddik had asked, but the man wasn’t home. R’ Itche Der Masmid later said the Talmid Chacham was R’ Mordechai, son-in-law of the Alter Rebbe, who was married to the Rebbetzin Fraida. Nervous, R’ Yosef’s wife hesitated, thinking: she wanted to do as her honored guest had requested, but the shochet wasn’t there!
