Translation republished for Shabbos Parshas Toldos 5780 There is a Possuk‫ א‬in this week’s Parsha‫ ב‬that states: ‫וְ יִתֶּ ן‬ ‫“ לְ ָך הָ אֱֹלקִ ים מִ טַּ ל הַּ שָ מַּ יִם ּומִ שְ מַּ נֵּי הָ אָ ֶּרץ‬May HaShem give you of the dew of the heavens and of the fatness of the earth”. This is because the Divine name 'Elokim' represents judgement and contraction‫ ד‬whereas [by contrast] the concept of blessings is about giving, about drawing down and about ‘Hashpoah’‫[ ה‬all of] which come from the Divine name 'Havaye'.‫ ו‬This is consistent with the priestly blessings‫ ז‬where in each of the three verses the ‫ א‬Possuk: Bereishis (27:28): ‫וְ יִתֶּ ן לְ ָך‬ ‫ ו‬Havaye: Which is a Divine ‫הָ אֱֹלקִ ים מִ טַּ ל הַּ שָ מַּ יִם ּומִ שְ מַּ נֵּי הָ אָ ֶּרץ וְ רֹ ב דָ גָן‬ name of the supernal attribute of ‫“ וְ תִ ירֹ ש‬May HaShem give you of the loving-kindness of giving and of dew of the heavens and of the showering abundance below. Page 2 Divine name 'Havaye' is mentioned.‫ ח‬However, in this blessing‫ ט‬Yizchok says ‫וְ יִתֶּ ן לְ ָך הָ אֱֹלקִ ים‬.‫י‬ Furthermore, this same inference (where a blessing contains the name of 'Elokim')‫ יא‬also applies to the first blessing with which Yitzchok is blessed following Avrohom's passing; as the Possuk‫ יב‬states: ‫וַּיְבָ ֶּרְך אֱֹלקִ ים‬ saying: This is how you shall bless HaKodosh Boruch Hu blesses the B’nei Yisroel, saying to them: Yitzchok following the passing of "May Havaye bless you and watch Avrohom in Bereishis (25:11) ‫וַּיְ הִ י‬ over you. explanation: Even though ‫וְ יִ תֶּ ן לְ ָך הָ אֱ ֹלקִ ים י‬: specifically using HaKodosh Boruch Hu, delivered the the name 'Elokim' and not the blessings to Avrohom, Avrohom name 'Havaye', and we need to was afraid to bless Yitzchok clarify, why indeed does he use the because he foresaw Eisov name 'Elokim' and not the name emanating from him.
