Come, let us act wisely to them lest they become numerous and it may be that if a war will occur, they too, may join our enemies, and wage war against us and go up from the land.” [Shemos 1:9-10] Pharaoh tells his people: “We need to do something about these Jews. “If I am not a makir tova, no one else is a makir tova either.” A similar Gemara is found in Sanhedrin (37a): A certain heretic said to Rav Kahana: “I cannot believe that it is permitted for a husband to sleep in the same bedroom as his wife when she is a nidda. Is it possible for a fire to come in contact with fiber-chips and not char them?” Rav Kahana responded: The Torah testified about Klal Yisrael that we can be hedged with roses and we will not make breaches through them – i.e., even if we have temptations, we will be able to withstand them. The pasuk says that G-d saw that Moshe’s intent was to check out the phenomenon and immediately thereafter it says that G-d called to Moshe from the midst of the bush and Moshe responded, “Here I am!” Let us pose the following question: Who would not be interested in checking out a bush that was burning without being consumed? Listen now to the comment of the Baal HaTurim: Only twice in the Torah do we find the word “u’l’Yosef” [and to Yosef] – one is the above quoted pasuk in Parshas Miketz and the other is in Zos Habracha “And to Yosef it was said: Blessed by Hashem is his land…” [Devorim 33:13].
