Parsha Halacha - Parshat Shemot Batya Daughter of Pharaoh, then Daughter of G-d Sponsored by Miriam Fishman of Los Angeles in memory of her mother, Basya Rochel bas Shmuel Hirsh, on her 22nd yahrzeit, 22 Teves Parsha Halacha is underwritten by a grant from Dr. Morton Borg in loving memory of Stephen's father, Shmuel Tzvi ben Pinchas, and Bella's and Morton's parents, Avraham ben Yitzchak and Leah bas HaRav Sholom Zev HaCohen To sponsor or subscribe, please email rabbicitron@hotmail.com The Torah portion of Shemot describes how the daughter of Pharaoh saved Moshe from the river where she had gone to bathe, as the verse says,1 ‫וַתֵּ ֶרד בַ ת פַ ְרעֹה לִ ְרחֹ ץ עַ ל הַ יְ אֹר‬ ‫“ ָ וְ נַ עֲ רֹתֶ ֶ֥ יהָ הֹ לְ כֹֹ֖ ת עַ ל־יַ ַ֣ד הַ יְ אֹֹ֑ ר וַתֵּ ֶרא אֶ ת הַ תֵּ בָ ה בְ תֹוְך הַ ּסּוף וַתִ שְ לַח אֶ ת אֲמָ תָ ּה וַתִ קָ חֶ ה‬And the daughter of Pharaoh went to bathe in the river while her maidens walked along the Nile, and she saw the box (that had Moshe in it), and she sent her maid, and she took it.” According to our sages,2 the name of Pharaoh’s daughter was Batya. 5 See Exodus 1:8 with Rashi 6 Sotah 12b 7 He writes that the ambiguous word ‫ ּאֲמָ תָ ה‬is purposely used rather than ‫שפחתה‬, which definitely means “maidservant” or ‫ידה‬, which definitely means “hand.” 8 See Ramban on the verse that ‫ עַ ל‬sometimes means "in." 2 What’s in the Name? The Midrash says9 that G-d said to Batya, “Just as you called Moshe your son even though he was not (originally your son), I too will call you “my daughter” (‫ בתיה‬means daughter of G-d) even though you were not (originally) my daughter.” It has also been suggested10 that the name Batya symbolized her conversion from worshiping her father, who was a self-proclaimed deity, to worshiping the one G-d. Moshe Rabeinu prayed for her that she be spared the fate of the firstborns18 (in the tenth plague), which is alluded to in the verse19 ‫ ּטָ עֲמָ ה כִ י טֹוב סַ חְ ָרּה ל ֹא יִכְ בֶ ה בליל [בַ לַ יְ לָה] נֵּרָ ה‬- She sees that her business thrives; her lamp never goes out at night.
