חינוך ללא פשרות: למה "דמוקרטיה" מזיקה לילד שלך?

The Logic Error: Waiting for a Child to "Understand on Their Own"

One of the most widespread mistakes of modern parents is the conviction that a child should be given "freedom of choice" in matters of faith and morality. "Let them grow up and decide for themselves," they say, considering it a sign of respect. However, the Rebbe repeatedly warned: waiting for the moment when a child "matures enough to understand" means an irretrievable loss of precious character-formation time. The foundation of the soul is laid in the earliest years — precisely when the child is not yet capable of critical analysis. And that is exactly why the foundations of faith, love of G-d, and Torah observance must be laid in a pure, unclouded form — without caveats or "democratic" compromises. Just as a builder does not ask the foundation whether it wants to support a building, a parent is obligated to give a child a solid spiritual foundation without hesitation.

Discipline as an Act of Love

The Rebbe compared the role of a parent to the work of an experienced furniture restorer who carefully yet decisively disassembles a damaged structure in order to reassemble it correctly and firmly. Parents bear responsibility for the Divine spark within their child's soul. Every Jewish child is an entrusted treasure, and softness in matters of chinuch (education) is not kindness but irresponsibility. Firmness in faith is not rigidity — it is love in its highest expression. A child raised in an environment of clear spiritual guideposts gains not restrictions but stability and inner security. They know who they are, where they came from, and where they are going. Blurred boundaries, by contrast, breed anxiety and a sense of being lost. True love for a child is the courage to be uncompromising in what matters most, even when it is unpopular in the eyes of those around you.
