לבנות "בניין עדי עד": למה הגיון לא מספיק לנישואין מאושרים
בחיפוש אחר בן/בת זוג אי אפשר להסתמך רק על השכל
The Limits of Calculation
The Rebbe warned: a person cannot foresee all the consequences of their decisions — their abilities are limited. When it comes to choosing a life partner, this limitation becomes especially apparent. One can compile a list of a hundred criteria, verify each one — and still be wrong, because the most important things in a person cannot be measured by a list. The Rebbe taught: one must rely significantly on the Creator, who connects suitable souls. Even before a person is born, it is proclaimed in Heaven: "The daughter of so-and-so is destined for so-and-so." This does not mean that no effort is needed — one must meet people, get to know each other, assess compatibility. But the final decision must include trust in G-d, not only cold analysis of virtues and shortcomings.
Miracle as the Norm
The Sages said: finding a worthy spouse is as difficult as the splitting of the Red Sea. But the sea did split! And it split precisely through faith — when Nachshon ben Aminadav walked into the water up to his neck, without waiting for a miracle. So too in marriage: one must take a leap of faith, step into the "water," and trust the process. The Rebbe called marriage an "eternal building" — "binyan adei ad." The foundation of this building must be Torah, not human calculations. Calculations crumble at the first serious test, while Torah stands forever. When both spouses build their home on a foundation of Torah and commandments, their union acquires a strength inaccessible to any "rational" marriage. G-d Himself becomes the third partner in such a marriage, binding it from within.
Advice for the Doubtful
The Rebbe gave concrete practical advice to those who hesitate: do not seek the ideal person — they do not exist. There is no ideal among men, nor among women, nor among anyone on this earth. If you are generally satisfied, if you see in a person the essential qualities — kindness, G-d-fearing nature, decency — do not fixate on trifles. Do not allow insignificant flaws to overshadow what truly matters. The Rebbe advised: firmly decide to build a Jewish home — and the Almighty will help. Resolve is the vessel for Divine assistance. As long as a person wavers, help from Above cannot enter their life because there is no vessel ready to receive it. But the moment one decides with their whole heart, doors open, obstacles vanish, and G-d guides the person to their destined match.
