Tickets at the Cost of Life
The story of the rescue of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka from war-torn Europe begins with the heroic act of the Chassid Lev Bistritsky. He gave up his family's tickets for the steamship — tickets that could have saved his own relatives. This act became the embodiment of Chassidic self-sacrifice: the willingness to give up one's own safety for the Rebbe and the future of the entire movement. Lev Bistritsky understood that at stake was not merely the life of one person, but the destiny of an entire generation of Jews who would be saved through the Rebbe's leadership in America.
Across the Atlantic Under the Shadow of Death
The ship SS Serpa Pinto crossed the Atlantic during one of the most dangerous periods of the war. German submarines patrolled the ocean, sinking civilian vessels without warning. Every day of the voyage was filled with anxiety and prayer. Yet Divine Providence protected the ship carrying the future leader of world Jewry. This voyage was not merely a physical crossing of the ocean but a spiritual transition — from a world of destruction to a world of creation, from Europe sinking into darkness to America, which was destined to become the new center of Torah.
The Meeting at Staten Island
When the ship finally arrived at the shores of Staten Island, the Rebbe was met by a delegation of devoted Chassidim: Israel Jacobson, Shmuel Simpson, and Kazarnovsky. The moment of meeting became historic: the Rebbe Rayatz, the Rebbe's father-in-law and mentor, pronounced the blessing "Baruch mechaye ha-meitim" — "Blessed is He who revives the dead." This was no metaphor but a precise spiritual description: from the jaws of death emerged the one who was destined to kindle the light of Torah and Chassidism throughout the world. The 28th of Sivan became a day that changed the course of Jewish history.
