כ"ח בניסן: "עשו כל אשר ביכולתכם!"
השיחה המפורסמת של תשנ"א (1991) — האחריות האישית להבאת המשיח
The Sicha That Changed Everything
On the 28th of Nisan 5751 (1991), the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, delivered one of the most extraordinary and unusual talks in the history of Chassidism. The Rebbe's voice trembled with emotion as he addressed thousands of Chassidim with words that overturned the conventional understanding of the roles of leader and followers. The Rebbe said that he had done everything possible on his part to hasten the coming of Mashiach — and was now placing this responsibility upon every individual Jew. "Do everything in your power to bring Mashiach in actuality and in reality!" the Rebbe urged. These words became a turning point: from that moment on, the coming of Mashiach was no longer a matter of waiting for a miracle from above but a matter of personal effort by each individual.
A Call to Personal Action
The significance of this sicha cannot be overstated. The Rebbe effectively declared that the era of passive waiting was over. Every Jew — whether a rabbi or an ordinary worker, a scholar or a student — bears personal responsibility for hastening the Redemption. How does one do this in practice? Through adding in Torah study, in the observance of mitzvot, in acts of kindness and charity, through spreading the teachings of Chassidism and the ideals of justice among the nations of the world. The Rebbe emphasized: G-d awaits precisely our actions — not angelic ones, not supernatural ones, but simple human deeds performed with sincerity and dedication. The 28th of Nisan is an annual reminder: Mashiach depends on you.
