י"ח ניסן: קשר משולש של היסטוריה והשורש המיסטי של חב"ד
אופשערניש של אדמו"ר הזקן, לידת הרב לוי יצחק וברית המילה של הרבי
The Upshernish of the Alter Rebbe (1748)
On the 18th of Nissan 5508 (1748), in Mezhybizh, one of the most mysterious events in the history of Chassidism took place — the upshernish (first haircut) of little Schneur Zalman, the future Alter Rebbe. The Baal Shem Tov personally performed the ceremony: he cut the child's hair, leaving the peyot, and spoke words filled with prophetic meaning. After the ceremony, the Besht strictly forbade the parents from revealing the details of what transpired between him and the boy. This secret remained unsolved — but the result speaks for itself: from this child grew the founder of Chabad philosophy, a man who united the depth of Kabbalah with the clarity of intellect and opened the gates of Chassidism to every Jew.
The Birth of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak (1878)
Exactly 130 years later, on the 18th of Nissan 5638 (1878), Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson was born into a family of great rabbis — the father of the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe. From his youth, he was distinguished by a brilliant mind and the deepest knowledge of both the revealed and the hidden Torah. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak became an outstanding Kabbalist, authoring the most profound commentaries on the Zohar and Kabbalistic texts. His life became an act of heroism: despite being arrested by the Soviet authorities and exiled to Kazakhstan, he continued to study and teach Torah until his last day. G-d granted him a strength of spirit that he transmitted to his great son.
The Bris of the Seventh Rebbe (1902)
Another 24 years later, on the 18th of Nissan 5662 (1902), the bris milah of the infant Menachem Mendel — the future Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe — took place. The day of circumcision became a day of spiritual revelation. Rebbetzin Chana, the Rebbe's mother, recounted that before the ceremony she performed netilat yadayim with special kavanah, sensing the holiness of the moment. The Rebbe Rashab (the Fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe) sent a telegram with a blessing containing the words: "May he bring light to the world." These three events — upshernish, birth, and bris — intertwined into a mystical knot, binding generations of Chabad leaders into a single chain of Divine purpose.
