אלול: זמן חיים ו"שני המאורות הגדולים"
חודש סיכומים, מלא בחיוניות
15 Elul: The Birth of the Tomchei Temimim System (1897)
On this day, the Rebbe Rashab founded the yeshiva Tomchei Temimim — "supporters of the wholehearted." This was not merely an educational institution but a revolutionary system for training "lamps that carry light." A student of Chabad remains a "tamim" — wholehearted — for life, wherever they may be. The goal of the yeshiva was to unite the revealed Torah with the depths of Chassidism, creating a new type of Jewish scholar who masters both halacha and the inner dimension of Torah. The Rebbe Rashab said that the students of Tomchei Temimim are soldiers of the House of David, and it is they who will bring about the final Redemption.
18 Elul (Chai Elul): Life in Elul
18 Elul is the birthday of two great luminaries of the Jewish world: the Baal Shem Tov (1698) and the Alter Rebbe (1745). "Chai" in Hebrew means "life," and this date literally breathes life into the month of Elul. The Baal Shem Tov revealed the Divine spark in every Jew, showing that even the simplest person is infinitely precious to God. The Alter Rebbe gave the human mind the ability to grasp the Divine, clothing the deepest secrets of Kabbalah in a system of intellectual comprehension — the teaching of Chabad (Chochmah, Binah, Daat). From 18 Elul begin the final twelve days of the year, each corresponding to one month — a time for taking stock and teshuvah.
29 Elul: The Birth of the Tzemach Tzedek (1789)
The last day of the year — and simultaneously the birthday of the Third Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek. His works represent a monumental synthesis of all levels of Torah: Scripture, Mishnah, Talmud, Kabbalah, and Chassidism. The name "Tzemach" is connected to Mashiach, about whom the prophet Zechariah says: "Behold a man whose name is Tzemach (Branch)." This reminds us that the purpose of all spiritual work is the hastening of the final Redemption. The birth of such a great righteous person on the last day of the year symbolizes that every ending contains within it the seed of a new, even more exalted beginning.
