אלול: חודש "שני המאורות הגדולים"
זמן לסיכומים ולקרבה רוחנית לבורא
15 Elul: The Founding of Tomchei Temimim (5657/1897)
The Rebbe Rashab founded the yeshiva Tomchei Temimim in Lubavitch — a forge of spiritual warriors who united the revealed Torah with the depths of Chassidism. These were not merely scholars — they were "temimim," wholehearted individuals ready to carry the light of Torah to the most distant corners of the world. The Rebbe Rashab declared: "The temimim are soldiers of the House of David." The graduates of the yeshiva became the foundation for the future Chabad emissary network, which today spans the entire globe. Every shaliach (emissary), every Beit Chabad is a continuation of the seed planted on 15 Elul 5657.
18 Elul (Chai Elul): Birthday of the Two Luminaries
On this day, two great luminaries of the Jewish world were born: the Baal Shem Tov (5458/1698) and the Alter Rebbe (5505/1745). "Chai" in Hebrew means "life" — Chai Elul literally breathes life into the service of the month of Elul. The Baal Shem Tov revealed the Divine spark in every Jew, showing that even the simplest person is infinitely precious to G-d. The Alter Rebbe provided the intellectual framework for grasping these ideas — the teaching of Chabad (Chochmah, Binah, Daat). From 18 Elul begin the final twelve days of the year, each corresponding to one of the past months — a time for taking stock and teshuvah.
29 Elul: The Birth of the Tzemach Tzedek (5549/1789)
The last day of the year — and simultaneously the birthday of the Third Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek. His name "Tzemach" is one of the names of Mashiach, about whom the prophet Zechariah says: "Behold a man whose name is Tzemach (Branch)." This connects the last day of the year with the expectation of the final Redemption. The birth of a great righteous person on the last day of the departing year symbolizes that every ending carries within it the seed of a new, even more exalted beginning. May the merits of the Tzemach Tzedek help us greet the new year with a pure soul and firm faith in the speedy coming of Mashiach.
