אדר: חודש הפיכת החושך לאור

״אמריקה לא שונה״ ומבצע יום הולדת יהודי

The month of Adar in the Chassidic calendar is a time of joy, of turning darkness into light, and of the triumph of faith over despair. But beyond Purim, Adar holds many more dates, each carrying a unique spiritual lesson.

9 Adar: The Rebbe Rayatz Arrives in America (5700/1940)

On 9 Adar 5700 (1940), the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe — the Rebbe Rayatz — set foot on American soil, having been rescued from war-torn Europe. His famous words "America iz nisht andersh" ("America is no different") overturned the notion that it was impossible to live a full Jewish life in the New World. The Rebbe Rayatz declared that Torah and mitzvot are obligatory everywhere, and America is no exception. These words proved prophetic: it was America that became the world center of Torah and Chassidism.

16 Adar: Receiving Citizenship (5709/1949)

On 16 Adar 5709 (1949), the Rebbe Rayatz received American citizenship. This act held not only legal but also spiritual significance: it symbolized the final rooting of Chassidism on the American continent and affirmed that Torah can flourish in any country if Jews remain faithful to their heritage.

25 Adar: Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka's Birthday — Mivtza Yom Huledes

25 Adar is the birthday of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, the Rebbe's wife. According to Chassidic teaching, the world was conceived by God on 25 Adar — it was on this day that the thought of creation arose. In connection with this date, the Rebbe initiated "Mivtza Yom Huledes" — the Jewish Birthday Campaign, calling on every Jew to celebrate their birthday according to the Jewish calendar with special spiritual actions: increased Torah study, additional tzedakah (charity), and making new spiritual resolutions. The Rebbe explained that on one's birthday, a person's "mazal" (spiritual fortune) is especially strong.

2 Adar: Rebbetzin Shterna Sara

2 Adar is the yahrzeit of Rebbetzin Shterna Sara, wife of the Rebbe Rashab and mother of the Rebbe Rayatz. Her life was an example of selfless devotion to the cause of Chassidism and support of her husband in his spiritual mission.

7 Adar: Birth and Passing of Moshe Rabbeinu

7 Adar is both the birthday and the day of passing of Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses). The Midrash teaches that God completes the years of the righteous to a full count, and therefore Moses was born and passed away on the same day. This day serves as a reminder that a true leader is one who completely devotes their life to their people.

27 Adar I: The Rebbe's Stroke (5752/1992)

On 27 Adar I 5752 (1992), the Rebbe suffered a stroke during prayer at the Ohel (the resting place of the Rebbe Rayatz). This event became a turning point in the history of Chabad and reminded Chassidim of the need to intensify their spiritual work to hasten the coming of Moshiach — the ultimate purpose of all creation.
