Furniture Repair or Soul Education? A Metaphor of Responsibility

Furniture Repair or Soul Education? A Metaphor of Responsibility

Partnership with the Creator

The Sages of the Talmud teach that three partners participate in the creation of every person: the father, the mother, and the Holy One, blessed be He. The father and mother provide the physical body, while the Almighty implants the Divine spark — the neshama, the holy soul. However, after the child's birth, the Creator, so to speak, transfers exclusive responsibility for this Divine spark into the hands of the parents. They become the guardians and educators of the priceless gift that G-d has entrusted to them. This is not merely an honor but a sacred duty that demands complete dedication, wisdom, and constant spiritual labor. Every day of upbringing is a continuation of the act of creation, in which parents shape the future of their child and of the entire Jewish people.

Analysis and Discipline

Like an experienced furniture restorer who carefully examines every detail before beginning work, a parent must thoroughly analyze the strengths and weaknesses of their child. It is necessary to determine which factors shape the child's character, to understand which "parts" need replacement and which need strengthening. This process requires a combination of unconditional love and objectivity — two qualities that only at first glance seem contradictory. The Rebbe warned: one must not allow the spiritual details of education to fade for the sake of material comfort. When parents place career success or financial well-being above the spiritual development of their child, they risk losing what matters most. A true educator is one who sees in a child not a project for achieving earthly goals, but a soul in need of caring and conscious guidance on the path to G-d.
