We are used to waking up and assuming that life belongs to us. But according to deep sources, sleep is an act of entrusting your most valuable possession as a pledge to God.
Daily Resurrection
Every night a person "deposits" their soul with the Creator for safekeeping. The fact that in the morning it returns to you alive and renewed is not an automatic process, but a manifestation of God's "great faithfulness." God returns our soul to us, although He is not obligated to do so and could keep it as "payment" for our numerous debts and sins.
A Shift in Perspective
Realizing this makes the prayer "Modeh Ani" (I Thank You...) not just a formality, but an acknowledgment of our complete dependence on Grace from Above. One who understands that life is rented to them every morning stops trembling over material losses, for they know: the Creator is the most reliable Guardian, Who returns life to us even when we don't deserve it.
