27 Nissan: Unity Through Studying Rambam (5744/1984)
Launch of the daily Mishneh Torah study
The Rebbe's Revolutionary Initiative
On 27 Nissan 5744 (1984), the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, announced the launch of an unprecedented program — the daily study of Rambam's (Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon's) Mishneh Torah. This initiative was designed to unite the entire Jewish people through the shared study of the same text, creating an invisible yet powerful spiritual bond among Jews throughout the world.
Three Levels for Everyone
The brilliance of the program lay in its accessibility. The Rebbe proposed three options for participation: studying three chapters of Mishneh Torah per day (completing the full cycle in approximately one year), studying one chapter per day (a cycle lasting about three years), and studying the corresponding section of Rambam's Sefer HaMitzvot (Book of Commandments). In this way, every Jew — from the greatest scholar to the beginner — could join the program at their own level.
Spiritual Unity and Hastening the Coming of Mashiach
The Rebbe explained the deeper meaning of this initiative: Rambam's Mishneh Torah is the only work that encompasses all 613 commandments of the Torah in systematic order. When thousands of Jews study the same topic on the same day, a powerful spiritual unity is created that hastens the coming of Mashiach. The Rebbe emphasized that studying the laws related to the Temple and sacrifices is considered by God as their actual fulfillment, since in our time we have no ability to perform these commandments in practice. The Rambam study program continues to this day, uniting hundreds of thousands of Jews around the world.
