13 Iyar: Intellect in the Service of Holiness (1952)

Memory of Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib — the Rebbe's younger brother

On the thirteenth of Iyar 5712 (1952), Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib — the younger brother of the Seventh Rebbe — passed from this world.

A Phenomenal Mathematician

He possessed exceptional intellect and was an outstanding mathematician. His manuscripts were given to Professor Paul Rosenblum and recognized as works of exceptional depth. The Rebbe was extremely devoted to his legacy and emphasized that his brother possessed an "independent character" and strived for truth in his own way.

Sanctifying Secular Knowledge

His life embodied the principle: even the most abstract areas of knowledge — mathematics, physics, logic — can and must be sanctified, for in every sphere of creation a spark of G-dliness is hidden. Intellect is not an end in itself, but an instrument for revealing the unity of the Creator in the world. When the mind serves holiness, it achieves true greatness.
