Elul: "Two Great Luminaries" and Tomchei Temimim
Founding of the warriors' yeshiva, birth of two luminaries, and the coming of the Tzemach Tzedek
15 Elul — Founding of Tomchei Temimim (5657/1897)
On 15 Elul 5657 (1897), the Rebbe Rashab — the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe — founded the legendary Tomchei Temimim yeshiva in Lubavitch. This was not merely an educational institution — it was an army. The Rebbe Rashab called his students "warriors of the House of David" and "lamplighters" — people called to carry the light of Torah and Chassidism to the darkest corners of the world. The yeshiva combined the deepest study of nigleh (the revealed Torah) with systematic study of Chassidism — a revolutionary approach for its time. Graduates of Tomchei Temimim became the heroes who preserved Jewish life in the Soviet Union, risking their freedom and lives for every circumcision, every mikvah, every Torah lesson.
18 Elul (Chai Elul) — Birth of the Baal Shem Tov (5458/1698) and the Alter Rebbe (5505/1745)
18 Elul is one of the most joyous days of the Jewish calendar. On this day two great luminaries were born: the Baal Shem Tov — founder of the Chassidic movement (1698), and the Alter Rebbe — founder of Chabad (1745). The word "Chai" (חי) means "life," and this day literally breathes life into the service of the month of Elul. The Baal Shem Tov revealed the soul of Chassidism — love for every Jew and the joy of serving G-d. The Alter Rebbe gave Chassidism its intellect — a system of intellectual comprehension of the Divine. Together they created a path that unites heart and mind, feeling and understanding, accessible to every single Jew without exception.
29 Elul — Birthday of the Tzemach Tzedek (5549/1789)
On 29 Elul — the eve of Rosh Hashanah — the third Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendl, known as the Tzemach Tzedek, was born. His very name is connected to Mashiach: "Tzemach" is one of the names of Mashiach in the prophecies. The Tzemach Tzedek became a bridge between generations, uniting the legacy of his grandfather — the Alter Rebbe — with the future development of Chabad. His birth on the last day of the year symbolizes the completion of one cycle and the beginning of a new, higher level of service to G-d and the drawing closer of the Geulah.
