Kindergarten for the Soul: Why the Torah Has Almost No Words About Paradise

Many are surprised by the provocative fact that the Pentateuch promises rain, harvest, and peace for keeping the commandments, but almost completely ignores descriptions of bliss in the World to Come. The sources explain this by humanity's spiritual infancy.

The Pedagogy of Sweets

Just as a wise father promises a small child candy or beautiful clothes for diligence in studies, unable to explain the true value of knowledge, God spoke to the people in the language of material blessings. At the time of receiving the Torah, people's minds were too absorbed in physical reality to appreciate the value of incorporeal, spiritual pleasure. If God had spoken about Paradise right away, people simply would not have heard Him.

The Hidden Summit

Material reward is merely "training wheels." God concealed the details of the World to Come so that our service would not turn into a selfish transaction. As a person matures spiritually, they must understand: the true reward is not the "candies" of this world, but closeness to the Creator itself and the opportunity to be His partner, which in itself is higher than any imagined paradise.
